Annual Physical Q & A

What is an annual physical?

An annual physical is a preventive screening measure that assesses your general health and wellness. It takes various factors into account, including your age, gender, health history, and lifestyle.

It’s important to undergo a physical at least once each year. Many potentially serious issues, including high blood pressure and diabetes present few obvious symptoms in their early stages. Routine checkups can alert you early on and prevent them from getting worse.

What happens during an annual physical?

At Capital Health & Clinics, an annual physical includes several steps, including:

Step One - Vital signs

At the beginning of a physical, your Capital Health & Clinics provider takes your vital signs, including your blood pressure, temperature, and heart and respiratory rate.

Step Two - Assessment of your general appearance

Next, your provider assesses your skin, looking for any unusual bumps, growths, or lesions. They might also ask you about your lifestyle, including how often you exercise and if you drink alcohol or smoke.

Step Three - Physical exam

Your provider has you lie down on an exam table and gently palpates your organs. You sit up, and your provider shines a light in your nose, eyes, ears, and throat. Afterward, they test your reflexes, muscle strength, and balance.

Step Four - Gender-specific health assessment

Your Capital Health & Clinics provider assesses your sexual health. That might involve a pelvic exam and a breast exam or a testicular exam and a digital rectal exam (DRE).

Step five - Immunizations, lab testing, and prescription refills

Depending on your age and medical history, your provider might also recommend immunizations, lab testing, or prescription medication.

Immunizations teach your immune system to identify and eliminate viruses and bacteria. Lab testing analyzes samples of your bodily fluids to detect issues like vitamin deficiencies or high cholesterol. If you take prescription medication, your provider can refill it as necessary.

What do I bring to an annual physical?

The team at Capital Health & Clinics recommends bringing the following items to your annual physical:

  • Health insurance card
  • Results from any recent or relevant tests
  • Names and contact information of any previous doctors or specialists
  • List of the medication(s) you take regularly
  • A medical device card if you wear a pacemaker or defibrillator
